From Grief To Purpose: Why I Created Blue Bear & Co.
My name is Nici, I’m 41yrs old and I’m the founder of Blue Bear & Co., a purpose led brand created in memory of my son, Charlie.
I live in the UK with my family and like many parents, my life once revolved around the everyday rhythm of family life, school runs, busy days and the hope of watching my children grow up and thrive. But our lives changed forever when Charlie became seriously ill.
Charlie was a beautiful, funny, super loving and deeply loved little boy who brought so much joy into our lives. When he died, the grief was overwhelming. Like many bereaved parents, I was searching for ways to hold onto the love, memories and connection that never disappear when someone you love dies.
Out of that grief, Blue Bear & Co. was born.
Creating Bears for Life
Blue Bear & Co. creates comfort bears designed to help families hold onto memories and connection after loss.
Our bears are not just toys, they are designed to be “Bears for Life.”
Each bear can hold:
A soothing heartbeat
A voice message
A plush heart infused with a meaningful scent
These elements create a powerful sensory connection for families who are grieving. The sound of a voice, the rhythm of a heartbeat, or the comfort of a familiar scent can be incredibly grounding for children and adults navigating loss.
The design of the bears is informed not only by my own experience of grief, but also by my professional background as a counsellor working with children and young people. I have seen first-hand how important tangible comfort objects can be for children trying to understand and process complex emotions.
My background as a counsellor continues to inform everything we create at Blue Bear & Co., ensuring the bears are designed with children’s emotional needs in mind.
What started as something deeply personal, something created in memory of Charlie, has grown into something that is helping other families too.
The Early Days of Blue Bear & Co.
Before starting Blue Bear & Co., I worked as a children and young people’s counsellor for the NHS, supporting young people through emotional challenges and difficult life experiences. That background has shaped so much of what Blue Bear & Co. has become.
The transition from counselling to running a business wasn’t something I had planned. In many ways, Blue Bear & Co. grew organically from a place of grief and love.
In the early days, I spent countless hours researching materials, designing the bears and thinking about how they could offer genuine comfort to families who were grieving.
Starting a business while navigating grief was incredibly challenging. But it also felt purposeful. It gave me something meaningful to focus on, something that honoured Charlie’s life and legacy.
A Charity Born from Charlie’s Legacy
Alongside Blue Bear & Co., we also founded a charity called Thumbs Up for Charlie.
Through the charity, we are able to provide Brown Bears free of charge to children and young people aged 25 and under, diagnosed with a brain tumour who are receiving end-of-life care.
This is something that means the world to our family.
Knowing that a bear created in Charlie’s memory might bring comfort to another child or family during the most difficult moments of their lives is incredibly powerful.
It ensures that Charlie’s legacy continues to create small moments of comfort and connection for others.

The Best Part of Running My Own Business
My favourite thing about running Blue Bear & Co. is hearing from families who tell us what the bears mean to them.
Some parents share that the heartbeat inside the bear reminds them of when they first heard their baby’s heartbeat during pregnancy. Others say the recorded voice message allows their child to hear the voice of someone they miss. How the scent of someone they love can really help with separation anxiety.
Those stories are incredibly moving.
They remind me why this work matters.
Blue Bear & Co. is not just about selling products. It’s about creating meaningful connections that help families navigate grief.
The Hardest Part
Running your own business can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be challenging.
There are many practical aspects of running a business, logistics, manufacturing, marketing and finances that can feel overwhelming at times.
But the emotional side of the business can also be difficult. Because our work is rooted in grief and loss, I often hear deeply personal stories from families who are going through unimaginable pain.
It’s a privilege to support those families, but it also requires emotional resilience.
Balancing Family and Work
Like many parents running businesses, balancing family life and work can be a challenge.
But building a business with purpose has also allowed me to create flexibility around family life, which is incredibly important.
Family remains at the heart of everything we do.
Blue Bear & Co. was created because of family and it continues to be shaped by the values of love, compassion and connection.
Looking to the Future
Looking ahead, my hope is that Blue Bear & Co. continues to grow in a way that allows us to support even more families.
In five years’ time, I would love to see our bears available through more hospitals, charities and bereavement organisations so they can reach the families who need them most.
I would also love to see Blue Bear & Co. become more widely available through selected high street retailers and department stores. Not simply as a commercial goal, but because greater visibility and accessibility means more families can discover the comfort these bears can offer during incredibly difficult times.
Alongside this, I hope to continue expanding the work of Thumbs Up for Charlie, providing more bears free of charge to children receiving end-of-life care.
Ultimately, success for me isn’t measured purely in business growth. It’s measured in the difference we can make to families during the most difficult moments of their lives.
A Legacy of Love
Charlie will always be the reason behind Blue Bear & Co.
Everything we do is rooted in love for him and the desire to ensure his legacy continues to bring comfort to others.
Today, every bear we send out into the world carries a small part of Charlie’s story with it.
If a bear can help a child feel a little less alone in their grief, then that means more than I could ever put into words.
Because sometimes, in the hardest moments, it’s the smallest things that bring the greatest comfort.
